A Drop of The Amber Nectar
I must profess a fondness for a drop of the amber nectar, the good stuff, the Holy water of Scotland and a keen interest in Single Malts, particularly Talisker, the only single malt from the Isle of Skye.
I was introduced to Talisker during one visit to Skibo Castle, when James the Butler put on a Whisky tasting and I asked him to described the taste before trying it, and he replied;
"Take a spoon, leave the castle, cross the loch, climb the hill, then dig your spoon into the dirt and eat it."
He was right, and I recall that description with every warm, smoky glass. My son, then aged 12, described it in slightly less glowing terms as, "It tastes like a Dentist smells."
I would mark that day as the beginning of my Whisky collection, which includes some very nice bottles, but unfortunately tends to lose the odd one when the company is particularly jovial.
So, for those with a similar interest may I recommend The Rare & Collectable Whisky Auction being held by McTears of Meiklewood Road, Glasgow on 25th February 2009.
Particularly Lot No 184 which is described as;
Johnnie Walker Blue Label 200th Anniversary. Blended and bottled by John Walker & Sons, Kilmarnock. Bottle to mark the 200th Anniversary. This Limited Edition cask strength Blue label in a bespoke, engraved Baccarat decanter has been created to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the birth of John Walker. In original presenation box, with bok and stopper. Blended, 70cl, 60.5% volume. Auction Estimate: £1500 to £2000.
And the very collectable Dalmore at Lot No. 133. Described as;
The Dalmore-40 year-old. Distilled 21st March 1966 by the Master Distiller Richard Paterson. Signed Certificate of Authenticity. Limited edition, bottle no. 146 of 1000. In original leather display case. Single malt, 70cl, 40% volume. Auction Estimate: £700 to £1,000
There are more of interest, particularly Lot 58, but then we all have our favourite things.
