TIAS Antique Buyers Report
Ever wondered where you should focus your online antique sales or what country or state you should target for best results?
Well TIAS, the internets largest online antique and collectible mall has released their second semi-annual report, on where online buyers of antiques and collectibles originate. The last time TIAS generated this report was in 2006.
Reports are generated by compiling all of the online purchases from TIAS.com, AntiquesArts.com and Collectoronline.com during 2008. The data is then used to generate lists of the top countries and U.S. States responsible for the most online antique sales in 2008.
The results are based on data from tens of thousands of online transactions and millions of dollars in antique sales over the previous year.
2008 Total Sales Revenue by Country
- United States - Responsible for 91.3% of online sales
- United Kingdom - Responsible for 2% of online sales.
A very distant second to the U.S. in sales revenue, but the average order amount was almost double that of every other country including the U.S. - Canada - Responsible for 1.65% of online sales.
Bought fewer items than Japan, but bought more expensive items. - Japan - Responsible for 1.4% of online sales.
Bought more items than Canada, but they were less expensive. - Australia - Responsible for 1.2% of online sales.
- Germany - Responsible for 0.34% of online sales
- France - Responsible for 0.28% of online sales
- Italy - Responsible for 0.20% of online sales.
Bought fewer items than the Spanish, but they were more expensive - Spain - Responsible for 0.20% of online sales.
Bought more items than the Italians, but they were less expensive - Netherlands - Responsible for 0.14% of online sales.
With the United States generating the vast majority of online sales of antiques and collectibles in 2008, determining which U.S. states generated the most sales was the next logical step. Note that even though Virginia is listed at #10 on the "Sales by State" list, Virginian's spent a total of $8655 more on antiques and collectibles, than the entire United Kingdom in 2008.
2008 US State Antique Sales by Revenue
- California - Responsible for 12% of total U.S. sales
- New York - Responsible for 8% of U.S. sales
- Pennsylvania - Responsible for 7.7% of U.S. sales

- Florida - Responsible for 5% of U.S. sales
- Minnesota - Responsible for 3.8% of U.S. sales

"This is really fascinating stuff." said Phillip Davies President of TIAS.com "Compared to our last report in 2006, International orders as a percentage of total sales have decreased."
TIAS also generates annual and monthly reports for the top searches for antiques and collectibles and for the top selling categories. TIAS.com reports can be viewed in their monthly newsletter.
